This picture was taken at the recent 'Rimini Roller Festival' and the big question is - Who is the mystery man (or woman!) behind the mask? Jan 04/05 Luca gets the cut... and Tanja lets her hair down...

Luca D'Alisera & Tanja Romano, both world champions in 2003/04 and both idols to thousands. Like celebrities in the public eye, their every move is watched by all and we all enjoy something a little lighter when it comes to news.. especially at this time of year.
Most recently at the Rimini Roller Festival in Italy, Luca unveiled his new look - now gone are the long locks that we've seen on him for almost 3yrs now he's gone number 3 or 4, with only cms of hair. On the other hand, Tanja Romano let her hair down during the performance, showing that she can put on a show stopping performance no matter what!! A brand new image gallery from the Rimini Festival, courtesy of Raniero Corbelletti, will be found here shortly..

Jan 04/05 World champion out of action for months...
Newly crowned World champion, Sara Venerucci (Junior pairs 2004), is out of action for up to four months as a result of an accident while riding her scooter, involving an oncoming car. Sara's injuries are to her knee, in which she has severely damaged the ligaments and requires extensive surgery. One of Italy's finest surgeons will work with Venerucci. Sara took part in the recent Rimini Festival, with an off skate part, proving the off skate period is going to be very difficult for her!! The procedure, expecting to keep her on ground for the extended period is a serious blow to the elite athlete and we wish her well during her recovery period... Image © Globus, courtesy FIHP
Jan 04/05 'Skatingly' Samantha?
Samantha Bennis, who runs the EIFSA forum recently had this to say about ROLLER SPORTS. I have come under the hammer a number of times at that site and I thought that this most recent post by the site owner was worthy of discussion. I believe that comments like the following do not assist in uniting all sports on wheels, Inline skating is not a separate entity, it is a ROLLER SPORT and is governed by the FIRS body. If Inline is to have its life continued at world level, it must be embraced by roller sports and likewise, and posts like this from people who claim they run Figure skating associations.. As per following:

--------------------
Inline Speed, Inline Hockey and Inline Figure Skating get a relatively favourable response and will ultimately justify themselves as olympic disciplines.  It is artistic quad roller skating that is increasingly embarrassingly awful. It is clunky & noisy with ugly body lines. Not very artistic and it is not just a physical thing. It is a different mentality!

Quad skaters are recreational INVETERATE AMATEURS practicing a roller sport. Ice/Inliners are vocational RAZZMATAZZ PROS in showbusiness careers! I personally shudder when quad fundamentalists insist & persist in promoting roller sports. The biggest favour they can do for roller sports is to remove their quads... and learn to skate on real edges as the ice/inliners do!

Honestly, quad skating is out-dated, tacky and quaint! It just doesn't allow for a comparable poetry in motion as in ice/inline figure skating. Evgeny Plushenko on quads would be as ridiculous as Lance Armstrong on a tricycle!

I created the European Inline Figure Skating Association in May 2001. I announced it on the FIRS website and FIRS/CIPA decided to include Inline Freestyle at Worlds 2002.   skatingly, Samantha

Jan 03/05 Inline skater home with silver..
Dsc_4965.jpg (14494 bytes)KRISTEN SLADE is certainly home, and with a silver medal from the recent world championships! Already back at the rink training, Slade is optimistic about her continued success in the new year, and very excited to be returning to Italy again this year to compete at the world meet. In her home town of Geelong, celebrity status is upon her - locals recognize her in the street and at her gymnasium she is enthusiastically praised by all patrons, including high profile footballers. The following article, headlining 'Inline skater home with a silver' reads that it 'was twenty years ago when her mother couldn't find a babysitter so she decided to take her to the skating rink..' The rest as they say, is history.. Read article in full [here] Story by: Rochelle Smith, Photo by: Phillip Stubbs - © Geelong Advertiser. (Far left image: Courtesy Raniero Corbelletti)

Raniero Corbelletti has proven to be the most spectacular photographer in Roller Sports by capturing some of the most amazing images of our skaters over the past years. Dec 12/04 Sara Locandro speaks out about our sport..
Trainer of multiple world champions, Italian Coach Sara Locandro, openly speaks of the crisis being faced by almost every nation outside of Italy and the truth has to be heard. Although crushing, it is absolutely necessary for every country to follow Italy's lead if we are to take the sport to the highest level. Dec 12/04 Artistic world cup.. event of the year - surely!
gala8.jpg (16511 bytes)It is without a doubt that the Artistic World Cup is the most prestigious event outside the world championships on the roller sports circuit. Only the best in the world are chosen to compete at the 'Gala' event and whilst held in Florence - Italy, skaters from all over the world contest. This year, Luca D'Alisera has won the hearts of the three thousand capacity crowd, followed closely by Tanja Romano in second and in third... I couldn't be more happier to say - was won by Josh Rhoads, from Flor USA. Josh has been competing on the international circuit for many years now and many are waiting for him to step up on to the world podium, nice one Josh.. Each skater will receive a nice little pay cheque for this event, which I am sure they'll all be very happy about!! Congratulations.. More news at the official ArtisticWorldcup.org site [here] Left: Josh Rhoads bares all for the crowd in 2001 at the world gala..
Dec 11/04 The Mad Minute..
I caught up with Melbourne MX newspaper for a 'mad minute'.. Here's the article and 'Q+A' that was included in the edition on Dec 03 in what ended up being quite a revealing interview. Loaded in two part for easier downloading.. [Mx P1] [Mx P2]
Dec 11/04 Skater Boi tells all...
And so the story goes..  In an interview this week with Melbourne's leading gay newspaper, the Melbourne Star (distribution across Melb of 100k), I was given the opportunity to speak candidly about the release of my book and of the importance of the promotion of our sport. Interestingly enough, in all the interviews I have done this week, both on air and for print, they have all posed the same question about Roller Sports - and that is 'What is being done to see that the sport does receive recognition?'... and while it is a difficult one to answer - I think it is easy enough to say that everyone within the sport does their utmost to ensure we grow, while at the same time FIRS continue to push forward in the hope of achieving Olympic inclusion.. See the most recent article [here].. Article appears courtesy of Bnews.net.au - Page 05 Issue #83
Dec 11/04 Aussie contender not confident..
Valerie Leftwich (Skate Australia) has confirmed that while she was very honored by the 'verbal nomination' at the meeting in Fresno, by FIRS President Isidro Oliveras, (see news below) Leftwich is not 100% certain she could accept such a position when she is living in Australia. Although she will be happy to run for the position of 1st Vice President. Best of luck either way..
Dec 08/04 Female to take control of FIRS?
How true could this be? - Most recently at the world championships in Fresno FIRS (International Roller Sports) President, Isidro Oliveras, announced his resignation from the International body at a meeting held during the event. According to skatelog.com the President was quoted in saying, "Why not have the first woman president of FIRS, and who would be better than Valerie Leftwich of Australia?".. Apparently Sabatino Aracau from Italy has also expressed great interest. Leftwich, currently President of Skate Australia and also a member of FIRS would certainly bring a strong presence within the sport and a focus on Australia.. More news on that soon..

Nov 14/04 EDEA SKATES get RED hot...
In the beginning it was an idea, an idea that came from the heart of Adelaide, South Australia, and has turned in to the hottest product on the boot market this decade.. the new EDEA rose colored boot.. The boot itself is the same color red as the EDEA logo and will be on display at the world meet in Fresno. That very pair will be then shipped on to its home in South Australia where one lucky lady will receive them! Judging by some of the colors I have seen on a few pairs of skates from QLD, I'm sure EDEA are on a roll here! Note: the color of the boot in this image is not the exact color of the original. See official EDEA stand in Fresno.. EDEASKATES.COM
