In 1995 at the German Cup, a young skater caught the attention of everyone and I had the pleasure of meeting, the champion we knew he would become - Luca D'Alisera. It was obvious he would be the next world champion out of Italy when he hit the world stage and in 1997 he did just that and in spectacular style with a convincing win. Again in `98 he returned triumphant and his fan base grew bigger and bigger. By 1999 Luca was the word on every skaters lips and the anticipation in seeing him was breathtaking. Luca's performances on the Gold Coast were unforgettable, his image had changed, he was skating stronger and we saw him perform the triple loop for the first time at a world meet. It was not uncommon to see a 10.0 included in his scores and they were warranted. It wasn't until 2001 that we saw or heard of D'Alisera again, outside of Europe, and at the world meet in Firenze, the fans hit fever pitch - Luca was like a 'PopStar' and every teenage girl had his name on their lips. In 2002 Luca made history, performing the very first triple axel jump to perfection in a competition, in the history of roller sports and again went on to include it in his world championship program. The story is never ending and in 2003, together with his outstanding coach, Gabriele Quirini, it was a golden moment for them both marking their long awaited return to the top of the world, again - crowned world champion. It is with great pleasure, I bring to you - the interview.....
Q: How has artistic skating changed your life And what impact has it made?
"My life began when I started skating, it hasn't really changed at all since. When I was younger, much younger, I saw my cousins skate in a show and that is how I became interested and started to skate".
Q: Can you tell me what a typical day in the 'Life of Luca' consists of?
"I normally wake up around 8.30-9am and go to the gym to do my body training. I do leg work (with weights) every day, on the bike, step and cardio". Do you work on your back or lower back? "No, no back work. After that I go to train on skates in the afternoon for around one and half hours".
Q: Have you ever considered doing Ice skating? The rumors were very ripe some years ago!
"No, not really - only for fun. I love skating on wheels too much".
Q: Considering the status of Ice skaters, do you feel like you are missing out on the fame and fortune associated with many of the elite ice skaters at your level, simply because you skate roller?
"No, I don't think so and the money is not important. Now, I skate for the love not for any money".
Personally I believe it is a crying shame that our athletes do not receive the same recognition as the ice skaters. (that is not their faults) I'm sure Luca would be a household name globally.
Q: Your interpretation to music is incredible, how much time do you spend working on choreography as to the amount of time you spend working technical elements?
"Believe it or not, I do not spend a lot of time. The choreography for my short program was only finished ten days before the world championships in Argentina!".
Q: If you had to choose a highlight from your career to date, what would that be?
"Umm. Not winning worlds, but the first time I landed my triple axel in competition. That would be my highlight". When was that exactly? "That was at a regional competition in 2002 before Italian Nationals".
Q: Of all the World championships you have attended, which was has been your favorite?
"Definitely my first one in 1997 in Reus, Spain. I was young and I didn't worry so much about the competition, I was very relaxed and there was much less pressure and expectations".
Q: I know that time is short here Luca and there are people eager to get your autograph, but many are wondering - are there any plans for another revealing calendar in 2004, or better still a website?
"No, there isn't plans for another calendar at this stage. As for a website, perhaps one day it will be a possibility - actually a fan has made one site of me I know of".
Luca, thank you so much for your time... I know its difficult at a world meet to sit down and concentrate during a competition, but really - this is for the fans - you have many and I have received literally hundreds of requests for a moment of your time for those around the world to see online.. the people love you very much... Grazie... and Good Luck..
Luca's Message to his fans: "If you have a dream, you must live it to realize that your dream may not only be for skating but for your life and that anything is possible".
