Former National Champion, now UK Star..
Former Australian Champion, now star of the UK production 'Chicago', our feature interview this month is with Sean McGrath. Sean is the first of our feature interviews that our based on former skaters who have become International celebrities or stars of the stage and screen.
Sean McGrath: Feature interview 'from wheels to the west end'
Q1: You were a skater some years ago, and a good one. How long has it been since you have skated?
A1:I haven't skated for over 6 years.
Q2. What was the first non-skating performance you did post roller sports?
A2: Danced on 'In Melbourne Tonight'
Q3. Do you think that Artistic skating helped you prepare for the world of performing Arts?
A3:  Definately. I don't have the years of strict ballet training that many other dancers do. I found my balance and centre on the rink before I found it on stage.
Q4. What was it like performing in Cats? And which character were you?
A4: It's the most physical show I've done. I loved choreography and music, they made it an amazing show to perform in. I played Macavity.
Q5. You are now a member of the U.K production of CHICAGO, tell us a little about your role.
A5. I'm an ensamble member of the show. I also play 'Harry' and the 'Doctor'
Q6. Do you have a most memorable moment from your time in skating?
A6: I loved travelling to new venues to compete. I remember competing my last National Championships in Perth. My fondest memories were Sunday afternoons training sessions, blasting the music up and going mad on the rink.
Q7. Your coach was Julie Brown? Do you still keep in touch with her?
A7:I send Julie and Christmas card every year, telling her what I'm up to, though I've not heard from her for a while.
Q8. You once went to the high profile seminar for skaters held in Garmisch,Germany. How old were you then?
A8: I was 10 when I went to the seminar. I had a great time. Especially skating on the outdoor rink in Garmisch with snow-capped mountains in the distance.
Q9. What do you think that Roller Sports need to do in order to lift the profile and attract media attention?
A9: Media coverage, advertisement. If Ice Skating can thrive, so can roller.
Q10. Can you offer advice as a professional performer to any skaters who are aspiring to take the direction you have achieved.
A10:Work hard. The audition process can be tedious but if you know what you want, don't stop till you get it.
Q11. Are there any plans in the future for any more theatre work or are you heading in to TV or Film work?
A11: I will continue working in theatre for a while, though I would love to explore different avenues in the future.
Q12. What has been your favourite role and when?
A12: I love what I'm doing now in Chicago. It is a brilliant show, the set, costumes, music, choreography are all fantastic
Q13. You have been touring Europe for some time now, do you miss Australia? And when are we likely to see you back home again?
A13:I miss home very much. I look forward to returning very soon.
Q15: Do you have any words of wisdom for readers of this site?
A14: Only you can make it happen.
Congratulations Sean on your fantastic career and thanks for spending time with us.
Very special thanks to Sean for his time and effort in speaking with us.. Enjoy
