U.S Nationals: 'Wrap Up!!'
|
|
Whilst
the Nationals may not be 'wrapped up', I couldn't help but
notice when looking through some media shots one common factor
amongst many of the freeskaters who were photographed... and that
was a consistently HIGH freeleg during rotation, very
uncommon in Europe and many parts of Australia, but it seems to be a
technique either taught or adopted in the states.. Actually, there
have been some brilliant skaters with high freeleg positions, and
they did it well and it didn't detract from their items, eg: Scott
Cohen, Heath Medeiros, Eric Anderson.. they were all fantastic.
Though in these examples the skaters freelegs all seem to accentuate
the position. I would really appreciate peoples thoughts on this
topic if you are a coach or skater, write me.. (here).
For me, its not something I would ever teach or encourage,
especially when you look at all the top ice skaters, a high wrap is
almost unheard of.. but anyway, its certainly each to their own. These
images are not displayed to offend, they are simply examples of
freeleg positions by coincidence.

U.S Nationals: Update 4
|
|
Aubrey
Orcutt, Redwood Cal. has won the Open Inline Women's division
and will represent the US in both inline and Junior Pairs. Kimberly
Mazzuca, Seabrook Maryland, has taken 2nd in the field of six.
Tracey Wilson and Jason Nelson have both taken the World Class
Figure event titles out and David Jacques has made the No.3 position
in Mens figures. This could well be the first combined male skater
from the US in years if David is successful in making the team for
freestyle as he has done in the past years. Team Elite from Ohio has
won the Precision event and I'm sure they'll get set for worlds, Team
In-sync in second.
There
are some great articles written up on the Journalstar.com site,
including one with Aubrey
Orcutt. They have also updated their results
& stories (scroll down page) in html (not .pdf). There are a number of good
interviews and worth the read.
If any skaters from the
US would like to submit images or news, PLEASE do so.. here. For results to date
at the championships, visit US Roller Sports here. |

Italian Team that will dominate in Germany.. |
The
2002 Italian Team has been unveiled. And the surprise
inclusion is the boy who has been mentioned on this site a few times
over the past year, Roberto
Riva (pictured left). Roberto has been selected to compete
in the combined event in Junior along with Andrea
Barbieri for FS and Stefano Crescenzi for Figs. Not
too many other surprises though, the Team is outstanding and
includes likely winners of each event! To view

Inline

with only the Women's final to be skated. In the Open divsion (from

Sean Arisco, Pittsburg, Calif., 2. Scott Meredith,
Seabrook, Md. & 3. Benjamin Suber, Mesa, Arizona. The top
2 competitors will be eligable to compete at theWorld Inline

numbers, especially in the Elementary Girls division where the top 3
went to; 1. Saralyn Maurer, Lynwood,Ill. 2. Shauna
McCullough, Orange, Calif. & 3. Stefani Andrews,
Orange, Calif. . If any skaters from the

Laura, in Italy: sitting back and enjoying the excitement of
it all.. |
|
Heres an exclusive report live from the Italian championships
from my good friend Laura (thanks).
|
|
It seems all eyes were on 19yr old Tania Romano
during the ladies free. Her strength propelled her
straight to the No.1 position in the short and could not be
dislodged even after a outstanding performance from Alice
Baldan, who bulleted from 13th in the short to 2nd in the
final. An amazing achievement, also winning her the silver
medal in combine. In order of skating for the event of
the night, the Men's long program, Luca D'Alisera lead
off the group, and in what better style, than by opening with
a TRIPLE AXEL, the crowd erupted and could not contain their
excitement. Luca
D'Alisera performed his long program
from 2001 (Maxime Rodriguez - The Devil and The Angel)
and after a short but strong and fast opening sequence of
steps, out comes the triple axel, perfectly performed.
Following that, Luca executed without fault, a triple loop,
triple lutz-loop-triple loop comb, triple flip, triple salchow
and some amazing spins. The performance was faultless until
then end when he tripped during some steps and did a
'cartwheel' without falling, which apparently the crowd LOVED!
At the completion of his 4mins, there was a standing ovation,
the crowd was screaming, 'Luca, Luca' and he received 10.0 for
the A + B mark from two judges.
Davide Profita, 19yrs, shows all the promise a
future star. Profita did not complete a triple loop in
the competition but he did skate well enough to rank 4th.
Fantastic performances and certainly a great effort following
Luca. Leonardo Pancani, consistently a good
performer, skated well. Pancani's long program also had
a great triple loop jump in it and skated a good long program.
Mirko Pontello's short program was great apparently but
had a few troubles in the long arriving in 5th. Former World
Champion, and favourite for the title, Luca Lallai,
also performing his long program from 2001, skated last.
In the warm up he had done many great triple axel jumps also,
like D'Alisera, but come crunch time, unfortunately,
Lallai's attempt was not successful. There were some
other faults on other jump items in the program also which
only permitted him 2nd. Lallai should never be
dismissed though, he has experience and determination, he has
the big items too and will be determined as hell to win again
this year in Germany. The battle will continue.
In the pairs competition: everyone expected Patrick
and Beatrice to be in first place, and they were almost
positive 2nd place belonged to Marika Zanforlin-Federico
Degli Esposti. The real battle was for the 3rd place:
after the short program Michela Ermeti-Enrico Fabbri
were 3rd, Laura Marzocchini-Ivan Baldacci (a great
return!) were 4th and Carlotta Casadei-Lorenzo Ronci
were 5th. After the long program Carlotta&Lorenzo
skated fantastic and moved straight to 3rd.
Ermeti-Fabbri 4th and Marzocchini-Baldacci
5th. [Visit FIHP to keep up
to date..]

Italian Championships: Update 4 |

LUCA D'ALISERA IS KING.. with an AMAZING TRIPLE
AXEL... |
|
Luca D'Alisera is King
- it's Official. Last nights showdown between the two Luca's not
only saw D'Alisera dethrone 3x World Champion Luca Lallai,
but he also performed his now very famous Triple Axel jump in
the long program. Undoubtedly the tension in the air must have been
thick as mud in the stadium as he was stepping in to the jump, so I
can just imagine the Italians roar when he landed it! Wow, I can't
wait to see this for myself in Germany!! Lallai in second position,
Leonardo Pancani 3rd, Davide Profita 4th and Mirko
Pontello in 5th. What a championships and I can hardly wait to
hear all the details from my good friend in Italy, Laura, who
was attending the event last night. Visit FIHP to keep up to
date.. [Pictured: King on wheels, Luca

Italian Championships: Update 2
|
|
Luca Lallai is proving yet again to be
the strongest male in the world on wheels. Lallai topped the
short program last night in Rimini (96.1) with D'Alisera
in 2nd (95.1).. Leonardo
Pancani 3rd (1st in Figures), Pietro
Mazzetti in 4th of the 16 males conetesting. Third place
will be quite the battle as the two Luca's fight it out for No.1
tonight in what will be the highlight of the Championships.
Pizzi & Grossi lead after compulsories with Bornati &
Bornati closely in 2nd. In the ladies, proving she will be
back on the world scene after an absence since 1999, Tania
Romano, after a German Cup strong hold, is back and in pole
position after the ladies short program. Erika
Colaceci is sitting in 3rd whilst Grazia Corradetti
pulls in to 2nd. Two BIG surprises, the absence of Christina
Bartolozzi from the event after a great run of Top 10s at
World Level & a win in 1995 & former World Champion 2000,
Alice
Baldan, is sitting in 13th. There will certainly be some
changes in teh long program, as usual, but how far up can
Baldan move to make it on the Italian Team? Visit FIHP to keep up to
date.. [Pictured: Tania Romano, short prog.
leader]

| National Titles in Portugal hit the 40° mark... and it gets
hotter! |
The Championships of
Portugal took place over the last week and boy was it hot
there! Over 40° and climbing! Regardless of the extreme heat (as per
summer in Portugal) the skaters certainly pulled out all stops for
some breathtaking performances. Our featured 'Athlete of the future'
earlier in the year, Bruno Novais, won the National Senior title
after holding second position in the short. Spectacular showings
from Liliana Andrade (choreography by Gabriele
Quirini) and Diana Ribeiro were also crowd pleasers.
Junior champion, Manuel Magalhaes took out the Junior event
and will be shining at the Junior World meet. A
full report on the Portuguese Nationals will be found here very
soon! |
| Inline enticing the big guns of Australian
skating.. |
Since the Australian Roller
Sports Championships there has been a massive surge in the interest
in Inline figure skating here.. I'm hoping that similar
interest will be sparked world wide after the inclusion at this
years World Championships in September. Custom V1 Frames are in demand and will
dominate the market by the year end. Tammy Bryant has been so eager to put her
feet back in skates she hired some street blades and was reportedly
doing double loops in them (street skates!!), so look out world when
she gets a proper pair! Kristen
Slade, Sarah Jane
Jones (just received hers!) & Lauren
Backrack are just a few who are lining up for a pair of V1 Inlines.. We can't wait for what's to
come! |
| 2002
Italian Championships
|
The National Championships of
Championships, the Italian Championships, are only just around
the corner, and what a fine competition it looks set to be. The
first major upset is that 2001 World Combined Champion and
Figures Champion, Elisa
Facciotti, has been involved in an unfortunate accident and
will only compete in the figure event. The battle in the women's
free will be between Erica
Colaceci, Tanja
Romano & Alice
Baldan. All consistently strong with triple jumps included
perfect triple lutz and flip jumps by Romano.
Round 2 of the LucaD vs
LucaL battle, this time, both armed with triple
axel jumps and a highly rumoured QUAD TOE LOOP. So it on
everyone's lips as to what items will be performed under pressure.
Not out of the question at all though will be, Pietro
Mazzetti, Leonardo
Pancani (had a broken ankle earlier in the year!),
Daniele Tofani & Davide
Profita. Watch soon for more
details. Image: Italian championships in
Rimini - click to enlarge. |
| Who's that
boy?? and
where??? |
| Last year I posted a report about Italian wonder boy
Roberto Riva. I had never heard of him before until I
received a video from Elly Hadgraft in the UK, in which his
performance was highlighted. To this day I have been eager to get in
contact and hopefully interview him before he makes his debut on the
world scene. If anyone has contact with Riva or knows of his trainer
etc. I would appreciated you contacting me here. |
[previous news] Italian Youth Skater
Roberto Riva, remember the name - because if you haven't
heard of him yet, YOU WILL.. I have just watched some videos from
the Cadet/Youth European Championships and I have to say, there
hasn't been anything like him since Luca D'Alisera came on to
the scene. Roberto's performances at the Championships in Slovenia
earned him no less than five 10.0 perfect scores for his long
program, consisting of a magnificent triple lutz, flip, mape,
salchow, & other combinations. His spins are great and his
artistic ability is inspiring. Hopefully in the near future you will
see Roberto featured here on this site... |
