| Moving off the figure circles and in to another
arena... |
| Moving on from his
career as a dedicated figure and freestlye skater, take a look at
Argentina's hottest new export, Diego
Fariña. He competed at the World Championships in Mens
figures from 1996 - 2000. Now, after an appearance in a live theatre
production, his attention has been focused on the world of
modelling. Without a doubt, Diego will land himself a lucrative contract
and end up living in the US in no time. Ironically, in 1995 Kristen
Slade and I nicknamed Diego 'Calvin' when we first became
friends because we thought he looked like a 'Calvin Klein'
model... well, that certainly isn't an unlikely factor now, by the
look of the proofs below from one of his first shoots! Keep an eye
out as I am sure its not the last you'll be seeing of him... To assist in the promotion of Diego, there is now an
area complete with Diego's photo shoot. Go here to see the shoot in
full.... [Diego]

| Portugal's heating up.. and not just because its
summer... |
Whilst it's only a matter of days
before the Portuguese Nationals start for Senior, the
Junior's are certainly out in force as we speak, and no one more so
than Manuel Magalhaes (World Junior F/S 3rd 2001) who has been performing
some spectacular jumps including triple loop in
combination. Magalhaes has
been working on the famous 'Lallai' combination, triple
loop-loop-triple loop, along with some very nice triple flip and
triple lutz jumps. He will certainly be putting the pressure on in
Junior in Wuppertal at the World
Championships. Bruno Novais, (former Athlete of the future
on this site) will compete for a National title this week. More news soon.. |

| Inline events at the 2002 Aust. Nationals July
10-15... |
| It was all systems go
for Inline Freeskating at this years Australian
championships. In fact, it was the first real taste of inline
freeskating, last year only one event was contested, this year there
were 3 events and some great results. In the International Grade,
Donna Marshall from QLD competed and I was in the
International Mens (pictured below - short
program wearing V1 Frames and EDEA boots). In the Open division,
Nadia and Kelly Zaccaria and Jaymie Summers
contested the Open division. Scores ranged from 7.2 up to 8.4 across
the board and proved very entertaining and educational for many.
Interest from the audience was sparked when we all took the floor in
the first day of training. The fact that all the skaters were doing
double jumps and decent spins really set people back a little. The
triple jumps also proved a great surprise! Greg Lane and
Leigh Joplin, 'veteran' and fantastic Inline dance skaters, and
designers/manufactures of the new Custom Inline V1 blades (pictured below) were
overwhelmed with the amazing response to their frames.
Winners of all three inline events contested were all wearing
V1's and its a great sign of what the future
will hold. Watch this site soon for detailed information on how to
order your pair!! They also skated great in their Senior Dance
events. Aside from the freeskating, our Creative Solo Inline Dancers
also proved a treat and the high level of technical ability in the
dances was outstanding. Cassandra Sellars, Kelly Zaccaria
and Lauren Vega were the top 3 contestants in this ever
growing field. Their performances were all a treat! More news and images soon on relating to the Inline
aspect of the Championships... |

| National Championships 2002 Update from
Adelaide.. |
It has been almost impossible to get a
phone connection at the hotel I am at until now so I have to
apologise for the delay! The championships got off to a slow start
and with the events being so spread out there has been very little
time where I have actually been just in the venue. Anyway, the
figure events are over and there have been some ups and down for
sure. In Junior Ladies, the Russell twins took the top 2
positions for the World Team selection behind Gold medal winner
Sarah Jane Jones (pictured) from New Zealand. Karen
Clough won the Senior Ladies event, closely followed by
Kristen Slade in 2nd and Tamara Dineen in 3rd.
Janelle Payne from WA won the Youth Ladies event this
morning, her first National medal.. well done Jay!! Junior Ladies
free short prog last night was tightly contested amongst the with a
fierce come back from Lisa Gobby (former champ) taken top
spot, Sarah J Jones from NZ in second with a nice clean run
and Lauren Backrack in 3rd. Kristen Slade is leading
the Senior Int. Short with Kylie Russell and Lisa
Curtis in 2nd and 3rd. The first International Inline events
have completed the short prog. element, happily I can say my short
went well and the long will be tomorrow! apparently all the robotic
dance moves went well with the crowd, not to mention the silver
pants! All the long programs will be tonight (except Inline).
Will Salisbury won his first National title this morning
against another young rising star, Jonathon Young. More updates and results will be found here soon over
the next day.. |
| World Cup Gala.... back on track for the elite of the
world.. |
The World Cup
Gala in 2001 proved so popular, the event will now return to
Florence in Italy, yet again. 'The goal of
this show is to concentrate all the best of worldwide artistic
roller-skating in an hour and half to make the public feel the
sensation that only a real competition can give'. (taken from
FIRS) This is possibly the greatest
promotional tool for roller sports in years. The gathering of the
elite athletes, attract media interest and of course, generate mass
public appeal. Skaters will be invited to compete in the World Cup
if they are ranked amongst the top 3 in each of the disciplines at
worlds in 2002. Four wild cards will also be given. For more news on the Cup, visit the Official World
Cup Gala Site - A brand new site specifically for the
event! For images from the 2001
Gala and details, see here. |
| National Championships around the globe.. Good Luck to
everyone!!! |
Skaters around
the globe will be lining up to contest at their respective National
championships over the next few weeks. First up, Australia -
July 8
- 15 in Adelaide, South Australia, followed closely by Portugal - July 12-15. For many skaters
it is the highlight of the year and caps off their hard work for yet
another season, for very few, it is crunch time and blood, sweat and
tears - to make a spot on the National Team to compete at the World
Championships. Things will certainly be hotting up in Italy when
rivals Luca
D'Alisera and Luca
Lallai meet, both boasting triple axel jumps, July 22 - 27
Rimini. Joshua Rhodes will be looking at a
National title in the US, July 28-Aug 7 and Germany, July 30-Aug8
in Bremen [Euro] |
