| Victorian Roller

The 2002 Victorian Artistic

special performance by the local contemporary dance school,
promising to be great live entertainment. The event will be
contested throughout the weekend for all disciplines including,
Freeskating, Inline singles, Figures, Dance, Solo Dance, Creative
and also Precision. Other States championships include: SA April 26,
WA May 4-5, NSW May 4-5, QLD - June. Support your local skates at
the event, Croydon Leisure Centre, Croydon. |
| Let the
countdown begin... |
Normally I don't include
myself in the news on this site.. but given the current situation I
thought I would share it with you. Back in December 2000 following
the World meet in the US I considered not skating again though there
was a huge part of me that still wanted to. So, I decided to give
2001 a miss. Unfortunately during this time out, my listing on the
Aust. Doping Assoc. was removed and therefore I fell within a
two year ban from competition clause. Now, after one year of
training and preparation for 2002, I have found myself walking on a
tight rope, so to speak, awaiting the results of my application to
the Arbitration for Sport as to whether or not I can be waived from
the clause. The case is currently under review with the latest
update being that the application was lodged in Switzerland with the
Olympic Committee following guidelines of the ASDA. A
result is expected by the end of this month, during in which I will
have competed at three State Championships, in South Aust, Western
Australia and Victoria as domestic permission has been
granted. |
| Oceania's all
wrapped up.. |
The Oceania Games in New
Zealand certainly proved to be a success for those involved. New
Zealand's Sarah Jane Jones proved to be one of the big
winners with her outstanding performance in the Junior Ladies
division whilst Australia's Kylie Russell grabbed the No.2
position behind Anna C.Cooke in the Senior Ladies FS.
Australia's Bryan Lloyd Jones took out the Senior Men's
figure event beating NZ's Scott Alridge, who has won the
event for two consecutive years. Well done Bryan. Karen
Clough took out the Senior Ladies figures easily winning her
first Oceania Championships. And Junior boy Eugene won the
Senior men's division with another silver medal going to Brad
Tulk. To view all results in full, please visit here.. Pictured left - Silver
Medal winner Senior Ladies F/S: Kylie Russell |
| Darren Hayes,
Savage Garden.... on wheels! |
This weekend, former Savage
Garden singer, Darren Hayes, shot his clip for the
new single, Crush, right here in Australia - in Queensland. Skater,
Malcolm Crowe, worked as an extra on the clip and said that
Darren was really friendly and great to everybody on the set. The
video was filmed at a drive in, for most part in the actual cafe
with girls dancing and the skaters doing cross over and skate
throughs.. Though only a minor part of the clip, skating has yet
again been featured in a video clip for a major artist. Most
notably, Mya's FREE, in which many skaters from the
U.S where featured including Billy Crowder.. The clip
for Hayes is rumoured to be an Australian/Japanese release only and
will be released soon. It is the follow up single to his smash,
Insatiable, from the album Spin. |

2002 Oceania
Championships |
Junior
Dance - Kris & Candice AU are leading the way
ahead of Adam & Sally. Australia's Aaron &
Sarah are out of the competition due to injury an injury
Sarah incurred. Bad luck guys..
Junir Free -
Eugene from Australia is ahead of Brad Tulk
after the short program in Senior Free. Apparently Brad wasn't
looking settled at all and Eugene was and is performing
well.
Junior Figs -
Rachel Tonkin 1st, , Sarah Jane 2nd and Justine
Portelli possibly in 3rd (to be confirmed).
Junior Dance
- Rachel, Sarah Jane, Cassie. Julia 4th I think and Amy
Choma also very strong.
Senior Figs -
Karen Clough AUS 1st, Rachel Tonkin AUS 2nd,
Monique Tilley NZ. Rachel & Karen were neck &
neck on the first two figs, each winning one figure each. A
poor loop and a slightly weaker bracket sealed the event for
Karen.
The Men's
figures also held today and Nigel from Australia was to be
wearing makeup for the first time in competition!!! And that
would be to cover his black eye! Good luck
Nigel and thanks for all of the above
updates. |

| Former World
Champion takes to the inlines.. |
 |
Former 1999 World Junior Ladies Freeskating Champion,
Anna Iannucci - Italia, is highly rumoured to be
flourishing on the arena wearing none other than a pair of
Inline Skates!! Italy's involvement with Inline hasn't
yet been disclosed, but I have been informed that Anna is
training on them in preparation for the 2002 World
Championships, which indicates Italy will be sending skaters
in the new event. Anna was one of the most spectacular skaters
to watch at the 1999 World Championships and we have missed
her artistry on display since and we welcome her return.. Good
luck Anna. |

| 2002 German Cup
- Australians set to travel.. |
Back in 1995, myself, Tammy Bryant and Kristen
Slade, travelled to Freiburg, Germany, to compete at the
German Cup. It was a great lead up for all of us that year,
it was Kristen's first truly International meet and it was a
opener for Tammy and I before the World Meet that same year
in which we both won.. Now, after many years of convincing,
Australia has agreed to send another Team to open up the door yet
again for another group of skaters. A squad of 5 skaters has been
selected to compete at the championships from May 30-June 2.
The championships is contested by approx 14 countries each year.
This year there will be no dance or pairs for some reason. However,
it will still be a great competition. The skaters will have to
compete in their age groups which will see all our athletes in
separate events. Thus enabling our chances at multiple
rankings.
Linda Noble will travel with the Team. For
more info or requirements... here

| Skate Australia
recruits top Sports Management... |
| Skate Australia, formerly Roller Sports Australia, has
recruited two top Australian Sports Development Officers to assist
in the future of Roller Sports in our country. An 'Elite High
Performance Manager' has been employed to develop and plan ahead for
the Elite skaters who will ensure our Federation continues to
receive funding with improvement in International rankings. A 'Grass
roots Manager' has been employed also to assist with the development
of skating at all levels in Primary stages. Whilst this seem outside
the square for SA, its certainly the best move they have made in
years.. It will certainly show dramatic signs of significance over
the next years.. |
| A touch of
'royalty' for the Annual Coachlite Invitational in the
U.S... |
This years Coachlite Invitational
competition held on May 9-11 in the Chicago, will feature brand new
music by..... yes, Prince. Local skater, Chad Kuznicki, is
known to do alot of charity work for Prince, hence the pre-release
permission for use of the music by the artist. Certainly one of the
greatest musical scoops in skating history! The competition
itself will feature a special performance by the guys from the
CanAmCrew. There will also be 'fours' events for both Pairs
and Dance in which they compete as teams. [..here] |
| Germany already
on board with a brand new site for Worlds
2002 |
| The German Federation for Roller Sports is certainly going to
ensure that a web friendly environment is complete for the 2002
World Championships. The site has only just gone online and we are
thrilled to offer you the first exclusive view. Whilst its still in
primary stages, its certainly up and running... [Wupptertal2002Worlds site] [Wupptertal Sports Uni-Halle Site

| Worlds 2002...
looking good but no Gala planned as yet.. |
This years World Artistic
Championships are looking set to be another great event with the
added inclusion of Inline Freeskating and Show Groups. Last year in
Firenze, the first Gala competition was staged at the conclusion
of the championships. A multi stage event that showcased the weeks
Top ranking athletes performing show programs for cash prizes. It was an
endeavour to promote our sport with the final contest being
highlighted in a 30minute spectacular to the meida. This year,
unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Gala event will take place.
Sponsorship in Italy made the event possible.

| Top Colombian
skaters 'dropped' from World Team.. |
| Last week in Colombia at a qualifying round for this years
Pan American Team, top Colombian skaters, Mauricio Jaramillio
and Anna Maria, were defeated in the competition by two other
younger competitors. The success of the younger competitors prompted
Colombian Officials to remove Mauricio and Anna Maria from their
National Teams, therefore leaving them unable to compete at this
years World Championships in Wutterpal, Germany. Mauricio was placed
19th in Firenze 2001. |
| Italians 'Moulin
Rouge' cop a ban! |
Recently in Italy during a show
competition there was some heated controversy over 'racey' costumes!
Four girls who were using the music from Moulin Rouge had gone to
great lengths to fully captivate the mood of the movie, only so far
had they pushed the boundaries with their revealing outfits that the
president of the judges ruled them far too provocative and they were
banned from the event! I say bring it on girls and the word 'show'
means 'show!!'... |
| Invitational
meet attracts all the big names... in Donora! |
 |
Daniel Cardenas, from the United States recently
won the Junior World Class division at the Donora
Invitational Artistic meet in Pennsylvania. It was one of
the biggest invitational meets held of late. Cardenas reports,
"It was a great turn out, I mean you could hardly stand up
there were so many people". | |
| Valley Skating Center operator &
owner, Linda Miner, where the Invitational was held
advised that "660 competitors from 99 clubs
representing the US, Canada, and Mexico participated in what
has been described as the largest meet in the US for the last
three years. It was the 16th year for the competition". Next
year should prove to be even more successful. |
| World Class Skater David Jaques (recently Top 10
at 2001 Worlds) skated great and took first place". Cardenas
is hoping to make it to Germany this year for the Junior World
Championships in Wuppertal. Coming soon, the Pan American and
the Latin American Games in Colombia and hopefully we shall
have some news on both events.. For more news and full results
from the event visit the Skatetown page. It also has a link to the

| Interview with
the... 'President' |
Don't miss the feature interview this
week with CIPA President, Jim Pollard, who kindly offered to
spend some time out and answer a lengthy set of questions. It is now
featured all month on the site and has been uploaded. An interview
well worth the read and very interesting!!.. [..read here] The FIRS site
has just recently added this article to its main news item of the
day featuring the interview.. |
| U.S Gold
Skate... |
Fresh from her US trip, Skate Australia President - Val
Leftwich, was more than happy to give me a run down on the US Gold
Skate Classic event. Val was actually a special guest judge for the
competition held in California. Heres a little of what Val had to
report.. The competition was great!! The best
event in my mind was the Mini Group number, it was great and Gail
Coller's numbers took 1st and 2nd. The "Jet"s from West Side Story,
great had choreography. The other good event were the Mini
Production numbers, a lot of work went into these, it was won by
"Cabaret" Holiday Artistic Skating Team of Orange, I think that is
Gail's also. The inline events were super and Aubrey Orcutt did not
disappoint the crowd.. Great to hear.. for full

| Young Will.. set
to roll in to the future... |
| If
there was ever a young male skater to show promise in Australia
since Cameron Savanah, (former National Champion since
retired at 14 due to injury) well then its certainly young Will.
During the recent seminar at Narabeen in NSW I met him. He's
aspiring young student of Mia Tolfree and showed great potential to
be one of the best. He was very eager to show us his single axel as
he had just perfected it.. He is a great kid and very friendly to
everyone. Heres a few pics from the seminar of Will, Kristen Slade
and I. Good Luck Will.. |

| After a 10yr
break from the sport... NZ takes on a new National
Coach.. |
| Not since 1989 has Mark Lind been seen on the skating
circuit in Australia. Former coach of a number of Australian
Champions including, Linda Noble, Simon Reeves, Kirsten Murphy,
David Morrison, Elizabeth Bond and myself - to name a few, stopped
coaching suddenly here in Australia back in 1989, shortly following
my decision to go to another trainer. Now, over ten years later,
Lind is rumoured to be the National Coach for New Zealand.
Upon returning to his homeland briefly in NZ back in 1996,
Lind conducted a seminar at the National Championships. Tammy Bryant
and I were invited to perform exhibitions during the competition and
were visitors at the seminar. Lind's new found involvement in Roller
Sports will soon be apparent at the upcoming Oceania Championships
if he is acting in any official capacity. During Lind's years in
Australia, he was my coach from 1985-1989. |
| More more
more... girls on wheels.. |
| Pop girl, Britney Spears, has also taken a leading
roll in the world on wheels. Spears recently signed a three year
deal with Skechers, US shoe brand, who now have a brand new roller
skate on the market called the, four wheeler.. Spears apparently
wore them to a party recently, though no reports of any jumps or
spins performed.. The skechers skates will soon be
available.. |

Kylie Minogue's
popularity has never been greater across Europe and Australia and
now she is taking the U.S by storm. Currently No.7 on the US Top 100
Singles and Top Ten with her album FEVER (reached #3). Jan
31st, on Santa Monica pier Kylie did a photo shoot for David
LaChapelle. The new cover for an upcoming issue of Flaunt
magazine in the U.S. And coincidently, Kylie has featured
in one of her shots in a pair of 'rollerskates'... yes, its
true! The girl is now really showing her style! Go Kylie...
you've got me spinning around.. Flaunt Magazine out now and

| Interview with
Sean Mc Grath... |
Former Australian Champion,
now star of the UK Production of 'Chicago' - Sean McGrath, takes
time out for an interview. One of the many interviews to come from a
skater-turned-star, to be featured on this site.. Over the
years in Australia, there have been a number of skaters who have put
there skates away and gone on to perform in TV, theatre, film and
modelling. Melissa George, formerly of Western Australia, went on to
become one of the hottest Australian actresses. She now works and
lives in NewYork and L.A.. More soon [here] |

| Brother, where
art though? |
Herald Sun Newspaper: Wed 15th Jan, 2002 Sharna West, former Big Brother star, featured and
pictured.. Time is running out
for would-be Big Brother stars, with video auditions due by 5pm on
Friday. "We'll be looking for strong individual people, who are
comfortable with who they are and comfortable with other people," Mr
Clucas said, Channel 10 factual programming head. Two hopefuls who
would jump at the chance to be on the show are 32yr old Melissa
Latham and 31yr old Jayson Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe, a former
world champion roller skater, said he loved the show because he saw
normal people making a big difference on everyday people's lives. He
does not have a problem leaving family and friends and coping with
different personalities. "I think you just learn to adapt to
strangers," Sutcliffe said. For Latham, who is a teacher,
the social experiment aspect of the show appeals to her. "The
short-term fame would be another interesting experience, but it
isn't what motivates me," she said. Story by: Luke Dennehy, Entertainment Reporter.

| Australia Cup in
Melbourne... You are invited!! |
Roller Sports Victoria will be
hosting for the first time, the Australia Cup on January
26-27 at the Springers Leisure Centre. The Cup will contest both,
Artistic, Speed and Inline Hockey events over the weekend.
Artistic will include, Championship - Elementary and Skater
Achiever levels. So if you looking for the ideal meet to kick off
the season, then this is the event for you.. Don't forget Nationals
are early this year in July and it's an ideal way to get you back in
shape for 2002.. Its been many years since there has been
a competition that has brought all disciplines of skating together
outside of the National Championships or Oceania. So this is a great
opportunity to assist in making it a success and ensure future
events like this to continue by taking part. So if you are from
interstate, consider it. Flights are at an all time low!!! Nominations close on December 22nd. If you have
further inquiries and would like to come to Melbourne to compete in
the Cup, please contact here. For other
