17/03 Moving
on to Senior.. |
It's
now time to make way for the Senior championships, with it
guaranteeing some absolutely spectacular performances and events.
The Italian team (left) all seem to be in fine spirit, including the
very popular, Luca D'Alisera, set to take battle with
Argentina's Daniel Ariolla, with a capacity crowd backed
support, no doubt. All listings and events will be added in
the next days. Also a new updates page will replace this one,
although you will still be able to access it. It's time to move on
now and I hope you are enjoying the coverage I have hoped to bring
you over the years but haven't been able to due to internet access
problems.. This year its been great and I'm really happy to be able
to assist, thankyou for all your emails.. MORE SOON!

17/03 Upsets
in Inline & Precision... |
Both
former Inline world champions took the silver medals this year, Sutcliffe
& Marangoni, to make way for the new champs - Bryant
& Iglesis in an outstanding demonstration of what can be
achieved in this new discipline. Although Bryant was very ill, she
took the floor and made it through to the end as we stood on the
side breathing deeply for her, praying she'd make it through.. That
she did and took the crown from Marangoni, both performances were
brilliant and Argentina's Daniela Rhodas & Italy's
Lorenzo Ronci, also newcomers to inline, took the podium for the
first time in third place - congratulations to both & it is
great to see the sport growing at such an accellerated rate.
The
upsets didn't stop there, new World Precision champs also took the
stage by storm, Argentina's 'Millenium' team won the gold
with 'Skate Attack' from Germany in 2nd and another Arg. Team
in 3rd, 'Gruppo Buenos Aires'. The didn't stop there, the
team in 4th actually got a perfect score of 10.0 for their
performance, even though one skater fell over. Australia's new team,
'Skate Australia' performed brilliantly, early on in the
field and managed a very credible placing of 8th of 16 teams, a huge
field, and a great effort.
In
all, the night was spectacular viewing & entertainment for the
6,500+ capacity crowd. The opening of the evening was sensational,
with the cast of the musical HAIR performing a 20min
set in brilliant fashion, followed by more entertainment and a HUGE
athlete on floor ceremony. In fact, as each country was called on to
the floor to participate in the ceremony, some had to close off the
calls as it was taking up to 5mins to get the skaters actually on to
the floor itself. Brazil already had at least 80 skaters on
the floor (pictured left) and there were still loads more to come
still lining up in the stands waiting. There must have been at least
1,000 (if not more) athletes in the opening and it was a
tight squeeze to fit them all on. A mindblowing spectacle, and to be
a part of one of, if not, the biggest world championship opening in
History was truly mind blowing.
A
special award, and
warranted, was presented last night by CIPA to two
outstanding athletes who have cemented their names in the history of
our sport. They need no introduction, PATRICK VENERUCCI &
BEATRICE PALAZZI ROSSI. The award was presented to Patrick, Bea
was not in attendance, for their outstanding achievements in Pairs
skating spanning a decade, with no less than nine World Championship
Gold medals. Their performances have captivated the minds and hearts
of audiences around the world and taken the discipline of pairs to a
new level. They are truly, stars....

16/03 Flu
strikes bad... |
It
seems there is a very bad case of the flu hitting skaters here, more
so in the Australian Team. The most recent case with Tammy Bryant,
(pictured left in the back of the ambulance trying to make me
feel better upon arrival) although in training this morning you
would never have guessed it. Esther Ambrus was also struck
quite badly and is back on her feet today. Upon arriving in Chile, I
too was victim to food poisoning and from NZ to Chile I was flat out
on my back of the plane ultimately having to have an injection. An
ambulance picked me up in Chile and took me to hospital and after
30mins on a drip, I was feeling a damn sight better and well on the
way to recovery. I just hope this wasn't the beginning of the bug,
most say not. Anyway, all fingers are crossed for Tammy as she has
to skate tonight... We know she can do it.

15/03 Capacity
crowd for show & inline.. |
The
stadium tonight was at capacity, as it will be again tomorrow night
for the opening of the Senior-Inline-Show & Precision. The
atmosphere was electric and the crowd was certainly 100% behind the
Argies.. it was awesome. The inline event was very well supported, Walter
Iglesis in the lead for the short, me... right behind in 2nd and
Lorenzo Ronci in 3rd with a great performance. Tammy Bryant has taken the lead in the
ladies with another world champ from 2002 in 2nd, Sylvia
Marangoni, and Daniela Rhodas in 3rd. See the INLINE
results for all placings in the short program.
The
Aust. show team were first off the rank tonight in the show groups
and they put on a great 'show', not bad at all considering the work
put in as they were purely only going to be here for Precision
initially. The 'In Memorian' (Italy) team were next and the were breathtaking
beyond belief, scores all in the 9.1 - 9.4 range, really wonderful,
with choreography by Sandro Guerra. Sadly, I didnt get to see the rest, but I'll put the results up in
the morning and a new photo gallery. (updated - see results - In
Memoriam were the winners)

15/03 Skater
of The Year 2002... |
Last
night I had the opportunity to catch up with Roberto Riva and
present him with the award for 'Skater Of The Year 2002'. This
is the first award of its kind and purely an internet award
generated and presented by my site. Roberto has been an outstanding
athlete, and continues to be, and his win in 2002 is only the
beginning. This year, the winner will be decided by YOU. An online
voting POLL will go online post the World meet in an effort to find
the new SKATER OF THE YEAR..
See
Roberto's Interview and athlete of the year page here..

14/03 Riva
Fever... |
|
Roberto
Riva, Italia, not only takes the Gold in spectular fashion
tonight, but with a perfect score of 10.0 His skate was
breathtaking and had the audience captivated for the entirety of his
four minutes on the floor. With no less than seven triple jumps in
his program, including three triple loops (all in combinations),
Riva is truly out of this world. Spain's Albert Trilla took the
silver with a brilliant performance and proved the Junior standard
was only getting better and tougher. Marcel
Sturmer (Brazil) & Oscar
Molins
(Spain) faught hard for the bronze, Sturmer proving too
strong.
Although
I dont have the official print out of the ladies ordinals as yet,
the event is over with some upsets during the event which could
prove very interesting in the final standings. Argentina's golden
girl who won the short program,
Noemi
Conronel,
skated a strong program with some tough elements but also had four
costly falls on big jumps. The spanish girls did plenty of big
items, to perhaps give them the edge for a medal. Italy's Elisa
Giunti also put in a solid performance good enough to
place, so it will be interesting. Sadly, Sarah-Jane from NZ
took two falls which saw her scores much lower than we'd hoped for.
Her music also cut out just before her second last item, meaning she
had to reskate the entire performance. In all, the girls event was a
bloody good one and these Juniors sure know how to put on a good
show...
The
pairs event has just commenced and will be detailed with all results
within the next hours..

13/03 Day
2 comp: Big day out for Argentina.. |
Argentina's
Noemi Conronel (left) brought down the house this afternoon in
spectacular fashion with an outstanding short program that literally
raised the roof and had everyone on their feet at the completion of
her performance. Noemi is now leading the Junior ladies event and
followed closely by two Spanish skaters, Monica Gimeno Coma
& Nuria Huguet, both of whom nailed perfect double axel
jumps in their programs. Argentina & Italy hold 4th & 5th
whiles New Zealand's little power house, Sarah-Jane Jones (left)
is running hot in sixth, a much debated placing considering her
skate was so strong. Australia's Jenny Nisi & Ashlee
Heesman are both 21 & 22.
Roberto
Riva did not disappoint yet again, proving he is literally
leagues ahead of any competition, winning across the board with a
brilliant short program in the junior mens short program, performing
a fantastic triple lutz in combination since the triple jump has
been made allowed in the short program this year. No other skater
went outside the comfort zone and performed a triple flip or lutz,
however there WILL be plenty seen in the long programs. Australia's Eugene
Tirados had a slip on a spin and a minor miss on his double axel
to be in 12th position while Albert Trilla (Spain) &
Marcel Sturmer (Brazil) are holding 2nd & 3rd, both putting
in great skates and nailing triple toe loop jumps..
As
I was leaving the building the Australian dance couple, Cassandra
Sellars & Aaron Young had a minor slip during a lift,
none the less, put on a great performance and were holding 7th
leading in to the freedance component. Both teams from the USA, Kathryn
Kimura & Kyle Turley and Heather Menard &
Mathew Finlay, laid down some amazing work to see them holding
in the top three and will certainly be stiff competition for the
Italians for the final freedance. See results page for all
placings.
The
pairs is a competition all of its own for Italy as they hold down
1st & 2nd placings with USA's super skaters (who compete also in
Dance, Figures & Free amongst themselves)
Kathryn Kimura &
Kyle Turley
are in 3rd.

12/03 Day
1 comp: Junior
Ladies Figures.. |
The
ladies figure event have completed the first two figures and the
mens is now underway. In the ladies, the top spot is close between
Argetina and Germany (names
not avail)
and Italy in third. There seems to be some closeness between 5th-7th
and possibly some ties between the US skaters and Italy.
NewZealand's Sarah-Jane is around 8th and Australia's two Russell
sisters are both inside the top 15. All skaters names and
results will be on here tonight. Also a full listing of
competitors.
Tonight
we will see the dance and pairs events and a spectacular opening
cermomony and show, with hundreds of local skaters participating.
Lots more soon..
All
the Australian skaters are settled in and we are only awaiting the
arrival of 2 or 3 more skaters to complete the full team. Unofficial
training for the other skaters already here has been going extremely
well, with the assistance of our translator, Laura, we have been
making good passage to and from the venue each morning in taxis and
buses. The Precision team are having a great time and enjoying all
the excitement at the official venue.

11/03 Let
the games begin.. |
Day
2 of the training for the Junior meet shows that this is going to be
one hell of a championships in terms of participation and
standards.. Italy this year proving to be of the hot favourites
for many of the events with big star, Roberto
Riva proving yet again he is on top of the world. Today in
his training for the long program, he wowed auidences with his
triple loop-loop-triple loop-loop-triple loop combination, along
with a routine of stunning choreography.
Argentina
also has a few tricks up their sleeve in the girls event with much
improvement shown. Sunday night is going to be an awesome night with
a show consisting of 1,000 local skaters performing in a group
spectacular along with the opening for the senior championships and
also the inline events and precision skating. The capacity stadium
of 6,500 is touted to have been SOLD OUT for days now, with
cost of even the highest level seats going at sky rocket prices..
Nine
males have registered so far for the inline event and seven females,
including both no.1 ranked skaters from 2002 of Italy and
Australia. This is a great boost for the inline discipline,
proving it will only grow from year to year as the standard
progresses. The full listings will be available as the week unfolds.
Numbers in the Junior championships are approximately 30 per female
event, 15 for the mens, 8 dance teams and 9 pairs teams. These
figures are relatively low, although many of the countries who have
not attended are purely out because of the cost of travel and the
state of the economies.
The
floor seems to be in great condition, although very tight, its a
good length, perhaps a little narrow. All of the skaters seem to be
sticking alot on the spins and complaining that the floor is a
little uneven in areas, but it appears the floor will settles the
more it is used. The stadium is fantastic and my only complaint is
the music, its SO loud.. seriously, so many people were covering
their ears during many of the programs skated. However, this venue
is reknown for holding rock concerts, and the system used is
sublime, so its great on the other hand to have a decent sound
system!
Pictures
will be added as soon as i can figure out how to load them
(discreetly)
in this internet cafe!

07/03 2003
WORLD MEET... ARGENTINA |
| Most
of the Junior teams have now arrived in Buenos Aries and are hitting
the training venues. New Zealand's, Sarah-Jane Jones, (3rd
2002 Jun Comb) says
"Wow it is very hot here. the
stadium looks awesome jay. I think its just been revarnished so it looks really
grippy. ill let u know when we skate on it on Monday. Training rink is grippy too!!!
Italians turned up half an hour b4 the end of our training. excellent."
Australia's senior team leaves Aust. today and will be out and about
within days enjoying what Argentina has to offer. Updates for the
world meet this year will all be completed on a similar format to
this news page, as with 2001 in Firenze. Its far less complicated
and makes for easy viewing.. More soon..
